CALIFORNIA—Authorities indicated that an officer with the Benicia Police Department accidentally struck a pedestrian with the patrol car Wednesday, November 11 killing them.

The officer was patrolling around 2 a.m. when he struck the pedestrian in the 1900 block of East 2nd Street near the off- and on-ramps to I-780, the Benicia Police Department reported. In a press release, Interim Chief Mike Greene identified the pedestrian as Scott Hamers, 48 years-old. Greene said the paramedics were quickly called and immediately tried to save Hamers’ life, but to no avail.

“This is a tragic incident for all involved,” said Interim Chief Mike Greene. “Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.”

Authorities indicated the patrolling officer was not responding to a call when the incident transpired and have not clarified if the officer is on administrative leave because of the accident.

The Solano County District Attorney and the California Highway Patrol commenced an investigation into the incident and have stated the Benicia Police Department will not assist in the investigation. The name of the victim has not been disclosed to the public until his family can be notified.
