SAN FRANCISCO—Officers from the San Francisco Police Department detained the mother of a five-year old girl who allegedly abandoned her daughter outside the SF Zoo on Monday,  June 5. The woman was detained on Tuesday, June 6 after police tracked her down.

Witnesses allege that the woman threw out several things on the road before she pushed her daughter out of the car, leaving her on the side of the road and driving away. A man on a skateboard was seen leaving the area, around the same time, but the abandonment of the child did not happen in his view, witnesses reported to authorities.

According to reports, the incident happened at around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Great Highway and Sloat Boulevard, outside SF ZOO. The girl was discovered by a passing by ambulance that stopped to help the girl, who did not appear to have any injuries. The woman also had a 1 year-old in the backseat of the car, with the father of that child in the car, when she drove off.

Police were able to locate the man who has been cooperating with authorities in the investigation, authorities reported. He directed police to the address of his child’s babysitter in Oakland, which lead to the detainment to mother. Her name has not yet been disclosed to the public.  The 5 year-old girl and the infant have both been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
