SAN FRANCISCO—A blade-style prosthetic leg, valued at $25,000 has been stolen from a paralympian sprinter’s car.

Ranjit Steiner’s car was parked in the Mission District, where the vehicle was broken into and robbed of a laptop and the prosthetic leg, which Steiner needs to compete in the upcoming games in Rio de Janeiro.

The leg, useful to no one except Steiner, who wears it while training for track and field competition, is specially adjusted to provide the flexibility needed for explosive athletic movements.

Apart from the financial loss, the loss of the leg is hurting Steiner’s chances of making the United States Paralympic Track and Field Team, a goal that requires daily training and activity.

Jason Buzi, a Palo Alto philanthropist, has started a crowd-funding campaign in the hopes of replacing Steiner’s missing limb. At present, the page has raised nearly $2,000.

Anyone with information concerning the car robbery may aid the recovery of the leg by contacting the the SFPD anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or texting a tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
