HOLLYWOOD—I teased that this movie might open up to large numbers at the box-office and I was right. The horror-flick, “A Quiet Place” starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinki blew away expectations opening to an impressive $50 million during its debut weekend. I can guarantee you right now; strong word-of-mouth buzz for this flick will keep it in the top spot in theaters next weekend. With a mere budget of only $17 million, the film has tripled its earnings in just one weekend, and with such impressive numbers could easily earn a sequel.
Last week’s champion, “Ready Player One” dropped to second place earning $25 million. After two weeks in theaters, the Steven Spielberg sci-fi adventure has mounted just over $97 million, and will likely cross the $100 million mark by Monday. Nabbing third place was the R-rated comedy “Blockers” starring John Cena and Leslie Mann with a modest $21.4 million. Not bad, for a movie that many have compared to “Neighbors,” but slightly lacking on the comedic timing aspect.
Proving that a good movie can have strong legs, “Black Panther” stayed comfortable in fourth place with another $8.4 million. The movie has now grossed a domestic tally of $665 million, and has become the third highest grossing film of all-time. “I Can Only Imagine” continues to find it audience to round out the top five adding another $8.3 million to its total. Since its release the film has earned over $70 million. This weekend sees the release of another horror film “Truth or Dare” starring Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey.
