BEVERLY HILLS—The 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were held on June 22 at the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel. The ceremony was an interesting one hosted by comedienne Kathy Griffin who threw out quite a few outlandish jokes to say the least. While many may have suspected Griffin to bomb, she was quite hilarious to say the least.
The one thing missing from this awards show was it was not televised on television. Yep, if you wanted to see who claimed the big prize, the Internet was the only way to see who was victorious. And the red carpet, let’s just say those ladies who were interviewing stars on the red carpet, wow. That had to be the most awkward and most horrifying interviews that I have ever, ever seen on the red carpet. Whoever booked these ladies should never, consider them to interview celebs for the red carpet. Other issues included the long delays for winners to take the stage. That awkward silence was deafening in my opinion.
Ruling the night was the daytime soap “The Young and the Restless” who took home the prize of Outstanding Drama Series besting “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of Our Lives” and “One Life to Live.” The award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Eric Martsolf for “Days of Our Lives.” It was a win I predicted and I must say I’m happy that I nailed it write on the money.
The big winner for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series went to a stunned Amelia Heinle for “The Young and the Restless.” Must say I was expecting Elizabeth Hendrickson to capture the prize, but it was indeed a tough race.
It was definitely nice to see the Academy driving some curveballs this year, like in the Outstanding Talk Show Host category which resulted in a tie between Katie Couric and Dr. Oz. Steve Harvey was a two-time winner at Sunday’s ceremony winning for Outstanding Talk Show Host Informative and Outstanding Talk Show Informative.
“The Young and the Restless” took home the prize for Outstanding Writing Series, while “One Life to Live” clamed the prize for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series.
Hunter King won the award for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series for her work on “The Young and the Restless,” while Chandler Massey did a three-peat for the prize of Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for his work on “Days of Our Lives.” Massey even joked on stage about the reel showed during the ceremony that featured his replacement, not Massey himself.
Billy Miller, as many predicted took home the prize for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on “The Young and the Restless.” He gave a bittersweet speech to say the least. In a surprise, as I suspected, Eileen Davidson won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on “Days of Our Lives.”
“GH’s” Madeleine (Donna Mills) presented the final award of the night for Outstanding Drama Series New Approaches to “Venice,” which was accepted by soap star Crystal Chappell. Mills then handed the award for Outstanding Drama Series to the cast and crew of “Y&R.”
The ceremony was not as bad as one had predicted, but I must say what happened to the glory days where the ceremony was hosted on television. We need to bring the Daytime Emmys back to television. Showcasing the event on the Internet as if, the people or the shows of this great industry is not important is a complete travesty.
