HOLLYWOOD—Singer and song-writer, Sam Smith, 22 was hospitalized on May 14 in preparation for throat surgery.

He shared a photo of himself wearing a hospital gown via Instagram. He captioned the shot: “Hospital Selfie.” He shared a second photo of himself alongside a nurse with “Flying” as the caption.

Smith announced the news of his surgery a week prior to his admission to the hospital.

The star underwent a vocal chord surgery which requires him to stay silent for three weeks and not sing for 6-8 weeks.

Due to the damage of his vocal chords, Smith also had to cancel his Australian tour dates. He announced the news to fans on April 28 via Instagram.

He wrote: “I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour. I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my goal chords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. We will be announcing re-arranged dates very shortly. This kills me.”

Smith won Best New Artist, and Record and Song of the Year at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2015 for the tune “Stay with Me.” His album “In the Lonely Hour” also won the prize for Best Pop Vocal Album.
