SAN FRANCISCO—A search team has been assembled in Eldorado National Forest in hopes of locating 45-year-old Ed Cavanaugh, a San Francisco teacher who has been missing since July 17. Crews from El Dorado, Yolo, and Stanislaus Counties are heavily scouring the wilderness area, which is located about 80 miles east of Sacramento and just west of Lake Tahoe.

According to reports, Cavanaugh was last seen riding through the trails of Rock Creek on a Yamaha YZ 250 motor bike somewhere between Mosquito and Garden Valley. The distance between those towns is approximately 19 miles.

Dozens of friends and family members of Cavanaugh have already gathered to help in the search efforts. Cavanaugh’s sister, Debbie Cavanaugh, told NBC Bay Area News that her brother is well-experienced in the type of outdoor environment he was last seen in, but that it is still a cause for concern given his disappearance without any warning.

Cavanaugh is 5 feet and 11 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has a bald head and a gray mustache.

Cavanaugh works as a teacher at Downtown Continuation School in San Francisco’s Potrero Hills neighborhood.

A student of Cavanaugh tweeted her reaction to the news of his disappearance, stating, “Woke up to the news my high school teacher is missing in El Dorado National Forest…I hope and pray he is found. Great person.”

Anyone with information on Cavanaugh’s whereabouts is asked to call the Georgetown Ranger Station at (530) 333-4312 or the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 621-5655.
