SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco Unified School District who are waiting for funds from Proposition 51 to fund the anticipated SFUSD Arts Center may not be prepared for the funds for at least two years district officials said.

The Arts Center is a $296 million project that will function as an art institute for all students within the SFUSD once completed. The Ruth Asawa School for the Arts will be moved to a new location.

Proposition 51 was passed on November 8 by voters and grants the state of California to allocate nearly $9 billion to build and repair schools across the state.

SFUSD Arts Director Donn Harris explained the school district is anticipating the money from Prop. 51 to help complete the Arts Center. The SFUSD aims to get at least $47 million through Prop. 51 to fund the new center.

If SFUSD is not ready to use the money, funding for the Arts Center can be denied or overlooked.

“I’m cautiously optimistic that we can accelerate this [project],” said Harris to the San Francisco Examiner.

SFUSD has already raised a substantial amount of money from investors. The school district added $100 million to their project from San Francisco voters on November 8.

The SFUSD will need an additional $125 million to complete the Arts Center. Harris left Oakland School for the Arts to help fundraise the rest of the money for the Arts Center.

The District’s Chief Facilities Officer, David Goldin, told the Board of Education the development requires all hands on deck.

“The $100 zillion question that should be on a game show is, ‘What is the district prepared to do to close the gap?” Goldin asked.

The SFUSD Arts Center is expected to be completed between 2021 and 2023.
