HOLLYWOOD—It was a fight amongst sequels this weekend at the box office as “Now You See Me 2,” “The Conjuring 2,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” all did battle for the top spot. However, in the end it was the supernatural horror flick “The Conjuring 2” which came out on top. The sequel to the 2013 hit, proved that when done right audiences will turn out in droves to the tune of $40.4 million.

While the movie did surpass its predecessor, I’d argue falling about $1 million short is not bad, with so much competition all vying for movie lovers hard-earned money. Expect word-of-mouth buzz to work to the movie’s advantage. Nabbing second place was the video game adaptation “Warcraft” with $24.4 million. The flick which cost well over $100 million to make, has disappointed domestically, but is doing massive numbers overseas, so the filmmakers should still be happy if you ask me.

The weekend’s other new sequel, “Now You See Me 2” debuted in third place with $23 million, which is just slightly under what its 2013 predecessor earned. Last week’s box-office champion “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” landed in fourth place with “$14.8 million. From the looks of things, this flick won’t come anywhere close to the box-office numbers the first flick delivered back in 2014. Hmm, maybe the flick should have been unleashed later in the summer, when so much competition wasn’t in the mix?

Rounding out the top five was “X-Men: Apocalypse” which add another $10 million to its tally. After around 3 weeks in theaters the film is on its way to crossing the $150 million mark at the domestic box-office within the next week or so.
