SHERMAN OAKS—Former UCLA basketball star Tyler Honeycutt was found dead on Saturday, July 7 after a shootout with police. Honeycutt, 27, was a former NBA player from Sylmar, California. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Honeycutt’s mother called the police because he was behaving erratically. It is unclear what caused his erratic behavior.

The LAPD reported that the shootout began in Sherman Oaks at about 5 p.m. on Friday, July 6. According to the LAPD Twitter account, members of the LAPD Swat team entered Honeycutt’s house and pronounced him dead at about 3:43 a.m. Saturday morning. 

Honeycutt fired at the police first during their altercation and barricaded himself inside his house. There were no reports of any injuries to officers during the shootout.

Coming out of high school in 2009, Honeycutt was the fourth ranked small forward in the nation, according to He played for the UCLA Bruins from 2009 to 2011. Honeycutt made the Pac-12 first team his sophomore year with averages of 12 points and 7 rebounds. He averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds during his career as a Bruin.

In 2011, Honeycutt entered the NBA after being drafted the 35 pick by the Sacramento Kings. He played in 24 games from 2011 to 2013, before leaving to join the Isreali League and later the EuroLeague.

Former UCLA basketball player Jrue Holiday tweeted out his condolences on Saturday. ”Still can’t believe this… Rest In Peace to my brotha Tyler Honeycutt.”
