CALIFORNIA — A woman driving on Highway 1 died after her car fell off a cliff near Gray Whale Cove State Beach in San Mateo County on Monday, August 31.
Firefighters from the Cal Fire San Mateo Unit reported via Twitter that their paramedics were rescuing a driver whose vehicle had plunged over a cliff along Highway 1. According to Mark Andrews, public information officer of the California Highway Patrol, they received reports of the event at 7:52 a.m. and found a car that had fallen about 200 feet off the cliff.
Andrews said there were no witnesses who saw the accident occurring but some people reported that a female driver exited the vehicle after the crash and fell down the remainder of the cliff.
Emergency personnel found the woman at the beach in critical condition. She was taken to the San Francisco General Hospital where she was pronounced deceased, Andrews said.
The accident is still under investigation.
