SAN FRANCISCO—On Monday, June 15 at 11 a.m., the 288th Academy’s Recruit Class was sworn in by San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew.

The San Francisco Police Department accepted 17 new rookies into the police department. There were two graduates who will become University of California-Police Officers. Seven are bilingual, being fluent in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Hebrew.

The current graduating class has a total of 9 officers who have obtained bachelor’s degrees and 4 with associate’s degrees. Their prior employments include Police Service Aides, 911 dispatchers, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and banking. Two have served in the United States military including the US Marine Corps and US Coast Guard.

In order to reach graduation, the 288th Recruit Class had to complete a standard 26-week academy training. After graduation, the new rookies will continue their training at the Academy for five more weeks from June to July before beginning a 16-week field training program at different district stations in late summer.
