SAN FRANCISCO—On Tuesday, June 2, Chi Chung Stephen Cho, 37, of San Francsico was found guilty by a trial by jury of driving under the influence on the Bay Bridge westbound near Yerba Buena Tunnel. He was found guilty of were driving under the influence of alcohol (Vehicle Code 23152(a)) and driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or greater (Vehicle Code 23152(b)).
The evidence and testimony against Cho’s driving conduct transpired on October 5, 2025, at approximately 4:48 a.m. shown that Cho crashed his vehicle into the wall of the Yerba Buena Tunnel on Interstate 80 westbound.
At 4:50 a.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded promptly, helping other drivers to detour from oncoming traffic by telling them to slow down. They took away Cho’s damaged vehicle as well as Cho himself to a safe place. When officers moved Cho to the side, CHP became aware of his inebriation and he was arrested. The CHP administered a chemical alcohol test at 5:02 a.m. on Cho, which measured his BAC’s level at 0.133 percent. While he was driving, Cho’s retrograde scientific analysis of his actual BAC was estimated to be 0.144 percent to 0.160 percent, which is twice the alcohol legal limit.
Assistant District Attorney Shauna Kashyap prosecuted this case with paralegal Nohemi Torres and IT support from Ada Yu assisting the case. The prosecuting team were able to build a good, strong and solid case against Cho.
