EAST PALO ALTO—On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 9:26 p.m., whilst doing a patrol check, an East Palo Alto Police Department Police Officer discovered a woman was distraught from being sexually assaulted while walking home on Newell Road.
The suspected sexual assault perpetrator got away in a sedan. But through the usage of FLOCK Safety Network and surveillance video footage, East Palo Alto Police Department Police Officers were able to pinpoint that the the sedan was from Mountain View. With detectives from both the City of Mountain View Police Department and East Palo Alto Police Department working together to locate the suspect, they then were able to connect with the man who was using the sedan.
After the police interrogated the suspect, a probable cause was issued to apprehend the suspect for sexual assault of the unidentified victim. While the name of the victim has not yet been released to the public, the name of the suspect has been released as 19-year-old Mountain View resident Steven Torres. Before Torres sexually assaulted his victim, he had never met her. He was booked into San Mateo County Jail and charged with sexual battery and assault with intent to commit felony sex crimes.
