SAN FRANCISCO—A 30-year-old San Francisco Police Department Academy Recruit, Jon-Marques Psalms, was hospitalized Wednesday, August 20, 2025, after a medical emergency affected him during mandated training. Two days later, on Friday, August 24, 2025, he had died. A procession was held in Psalms’ honor on Monday, August 25, 2025. His family, friends and fellow San Francisco Police Department Academy Recruit Class of 286 is in grieving. He is survived by his parents and brother.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) is treating this investigation into this situation as a workplace death.

This training exercise is mandated by law for California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). This is the first death during training of San Francisco Police Department Academy Recruit.

Psalms grew up in Southern California. He was a football player, playing the positions of Wide Receiver (WR) and Free Safety (FS) at Ruben S. Ayala High School in Chino Hills, California. He attended University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering in 2017 before moving to San Francisco Bay Area to work in the tech industry at Sigma Corporation among many other tech companies and volunteering as a head golf coach for Our Lady of Fatima Middle school. This year, he joined up to be part of the San Francisco Police Department Academy Recruit Class of 286.
