SAN FRANCISCO—A civil lawsuit against Uber was filed in San Francisco Superior Court on Monday, September 8, 2025 because Uber is based in San Francisco. A woman with the pseudonym of Jane Doe is suing Uber rideshare for abandoning her on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 after she vomited in the vehicle for being heavily intoxicated.
Doe was using Uber to get home to the Sacramento suburb Rosemont from a concert in Sacramento. But as she was being driven homewards, she vomited, causing her to be booted by the driver in an unsafe location near a gas station parking lot eight miles from her destination.
Doe was then approached by a couple of opposite genders. They offered to help out since she seemed disoriented. They took her to an apartment to sexually assault her at knifepoint.
On the morning of Thursday, May 29, 2025, Doe climbed out a window when her attacker fell asleep. She sought help at a nearby school, where she was taken to a local hospital, and law enforcement interviewed her. A criminal investigation is ongoing; there have been no arrests made yet.
The lawsuit accuses Uber of negligence for failing to protect vulnerable passengers. Uber falsely advertises itself as a safe service, but it really endangers its passengers. The failure to address drivers’ misconduct led to rider’s assault. Uber has inadequate policy enforcing improper guidance or policy cancelling riders, particularly vulnerable ones. Last but not least, Uber did not respond or escalate the issue within Uber organization to Doe’s mother’s outreach but send a boilerplate respond.
