SAN FRANCISCO—Residents in the San Francisco’s Tenderloin District are suing Democratic lawmakers, who instigated the distribution of ‘harm-reduction kits,’ as the Democratic lawmakers called these kits, that include needles, pipes, straws and foils, which is a part of its harm-reduction strategy.
The San Francisco Department of Public had been distributing these items to homeless folks in their sidewalk encampments, enabling their drug addiction, most especially to fentanyl drug addicts.
The civil lawsuit was filed because Tenderloin residents and business proprietors want the distribution of these drug paraphernalia to stop because it is leading to drug dealing in their neighborhood, drugs users injecting openly in the streets, smoking drugs out in the open and just lazing about, appearing either out cold or seemingly dead, according to one resident.
These drug addicts are also driving away businesses. One such business that is part of the lawsuit is the iconic Phoenix Hotel, which had to close down because gang members were openly selling fentanyl and other types of street drugs.
According to San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, drug addicts cannot receive these free drug paraphernalia outside anymore without drug counseling.
According to the lawsuit, instead of a payout, they want an injunction that would prohibit San Francisco from distributing drug paraphernalia.
