SAN FRANCISCO—Hailing from London, United Kingdom, award-winning musical artist Sam Smith came out as gay to the public in May 2014, which was the same month their debut album, In the Lonely Hour, released. Six years later, he came out as non-binary.

Aside from his personal life, he won numerous musical awards. The following is a short list of a long list of awards he acquired over the years.

Among them are an Academy Award for Best Original Song “Writing’s on the Wall.” In 2014, he won Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist at Academy Music Awards. In 2010, he won the Attitude Awards, sponsored by the British magazine Attitude, geared towards the LGBTQAI+ community. He won BBC Sound of…, awards by music critics and industry mavens, awarded to him in 2014 for Sound of 2014. In 2015, he won the BET Awards for Best New Artist. In 2015, he won at the Billboard Music Awards for Top New Artist,Top Male Artist and Top Radio Artist. He won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2015.

He awarded 25 BMI London Awards for songwriters in the past.

Their last studio album was 2023’s Gloria. They are scheduled to perform a 24-concert residency at Brooklyn’s Warsaw concert venue, starting October. On Sunday, September 7, 2025, Smith was seen on MUNI, filming Castro District for one of his music videos. He filmed outside and within the still-renovating Castro Theatre.

They walked along the Castro neighborhood before a concert at Chase Center in 2023, crediting the neighborhood for giving them more confidence than where the neighborhood they grew up in.
