SAN FRANCISCO—On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, California State leaders rallied at City Hall in San Francisco in defiance of Donald J. Trump’s second presidency.
In order to make elections fair and equal for all Californians, state legislators are creating State Proposition 50 that is going to allow state legislators to temporarily draw new congressional districts, responding to other congressional redistricting efforts in other states in the United States.
The elected state officials who came to San Francisco to support Proposition 50 were as follows: California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, State Senator Scott Weiner, Democrat- San Francisco, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey, San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman and San Francisco Supervisor Bilal Mahamood, who introduced the resolution, framed Proposition 50 as an important and an appropriate response to supposed attacks on Americans’ democracy by the Trump administration. Also, in attendance at this rally were Jane Natoli, an airport commissioner and a vice president of Equality California, an LGBQAI+ civil rights organization.
Since Trump has started his second presidential administration, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu had noted that San Francisco City’s Attorney Office had won several lawsuits against the Trump administration.
On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, a call to a special election when Governor Gavin signed Senate Bill No. 280. A special statewide election for Proposition 50 is going to occur on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
