SAN FRANCISCO—On Wednesday, October 18, the SF District Attorney’s Office announced that Christopher Redinger, 38, has been charged in connection to a hammer attack in the Tenderloin District on October 13. Redinger was arraigned on Tuesday, October 17, and pled not guilty to one count of attempted murder (PC 664/187). The criminal complaint includes several allegations including that Redinger personally used a deadly weapon in the commission of this crime (PC 12022.7(b)(1)), and that he inflicted great bodily injury on the victim (PC 12022.7(a)).

“There is no place for senseless, random, violence in our city,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I wish the victim a speedy recovery. My office will now do everything in our power to fight for justice for the victim and for the community in the courtroom.”

The San Francisco Police Department reported the defendant allegedly attacked the victim with a hammer in an unprovoked attack on the 700 block of Ellis Street in the Tenderloin District. Officers rendered aid to the victim who was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Redinger’s next court date is Thursday, October 26, for the preliminary hearing in this matter. The SF District Attorney’s Office moved to detain him pending trial because of the public safety risk he poses. The court granted the motion to detain Redinger without prejudice. The court will hear further arguments on the People’s motion to detain at the time of the preliminary hearing. If convicted of all charges and all allegations are found to be true, he faces 13 years to life in state prison.
