SAN FRANCISCO—Antone Metaxas owner of the racing horse Zakaroff won the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. With the odds of 1-48 Zakaroff pulled off a surprising win against favorite contestant Ann Arbor Eddie, according to the SF Gate.

El Camino Real Derby is Northern California’s richest race with winnings of $200,450. Zakaroff was the first local horse to win since 2008. Ridden by Kyle Frey and trained by Steven Specht. Zakaroff started in fifth place, but as the miles continue he gain momentum and advanced positions.

Zakaroff finished a half length ahead of money favorite Ann Arbor Eddie, winning the 1 1/8-mile race under 1:51.34.

“I actually thought that the race was too far for him, that a mile or mile and a sixteenth was his limit. But but when he got to the stretch today, he showed a little extra that I didn’t think he had,” trainer Steven Specht told the SF Gate.

Zakaroff earned just his second career victory, for a yearling is impressing considered when going against more experience candidates.

Zakaroff, along with the second and third place contestant in the El Camino Real Derby was not unable to be nominated for the Triple Crown prize.
