San Francisco, CA—In the late night of Friday, May 2, 2025, a multi-vehicle collision resulted in fatal injuries to one person, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 11:17 p.m. near the Interstate 80 westbound lanes on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, just before the Treasure Island on-ramp.

Authorities say a white Genesis sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver failed to slow for congested traffic. The vehicle struck the rear of a silver Toyota Corolla, triggering a chain reaction involving at least two additional vehicles. The Corolla sustained significant rear-end damage as a result of the impact.

The driver of the Corolla was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. No other serious injuries were reported at the scene.

CHP stated that the driver of the Genesis remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. Preliminary findings do not indicate that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Multiple westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for several hours while the scene was cleared and evidence collected. A SigAlert was issued, and all lanes reopened by early Saturday morning.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The incident remains under investigation.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
