MALIBU—Julia Louis-Dreyfus, star of the TV series “Seinfeld” and “Veep,” took to Twitter on Thursday, September 28 to announce that she has breast cancer. The actress posted on Twitter: “1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one.”
“The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”
The actress has used her diagnosis to promote universal healthcare, for which she has been an outspoken supporter of since it was enacted. She has criticized the current administration for working to put an end to the program.
Louis-Dreyfus has received a slew of support from fans and fellow actors alike. Christina Applegate, an Emmy-nominee for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series who has battled breast cancer in the past, responded via Twitter writing, “Mama, find me. Let’s talk if you want.”
The actress has an extensive career in television comedy with appearances on the live-sketch variety series “Saturday Night Live.” She has also appeared on the series “Seinfeld,“ The New Adventures of Old Christine.” She currently stars on the HBO series “Veep,” where she portrays the President of the United States. The actress has won a total of 11 Emmys during her career, picking up a record-breaking sixth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance on “Veep.” She previously took home the award for Lead Actress for her work on “The New Life of Old Christine” and a picked up a Supporting Actress Emmy in a Comedy for her work on the series “Seinfeld.”
“Veep” is slated to end its seventh and final season in the coming weeks. HBO, which airs the show, noted in a statement that the show will continue to run as smoothly as possible and that the production will make any adjustments necessary to continue working to complete its final season.
