SAN FRANCISCO—A Lyft driver and his passenger were killed in a hit-and-run on Sunday, June 23 at around 1 a.m. in the San Francisco’s Bayview District.

The driver killed on impact has been identified as Syed Waseem Ali, 24, of Fremont. He was an international student from Hyderabad, India. His passenger, Cela de Henriquez, 49, a grandmother of three, was on her way home from a babysitting job when a silver Mercedes-Benz ran a red light at Third Street and Paul Avenue.

The suspect driving the Mercedes fled the scene before authorities arrived, leaving the two passengers in the car to be transported to the hospital. They are expected to survive injuries sustained. Authorities are investigating the crime, but no arrests have been made.

A GoFundMe page was created for Waseem and has already exceeded the $60,000 goal to pay for the funeral expenses and transport his body back to India.

The GoFundMe bio reads: “As a resident of Fremont, [Waseem] was a life-loving and caring person. We met Waseem for the first time when we were searching for accommodations and we ended living with each other as roommates and close friends for the past 4 years. Sadly Waseem Ali passed away in a fatal accident occurred this morning in San Francisco (23 June, 2019). We kindly request for your donation to help the family meet funeral expenses and transportation of the belongings and body of the deceased to India.”

Anyone with information on the suspect responsible for the hit-and-run is asked to contact the San Francisco Police Department.
