SAN FRANCISCO—On Wednesday, August 5, San Francisco Sheriff’s Office officials announced that they were investigating the death of a man in custody at County Jail #4. Sheriff deputies found the individual unresponsive in his single cell early Wednesday morning. Despite medical officials attempts to save him, they declared the man dead around 5:30 a.m.

Sheriff officials’ initial investigation led them to think that the man’s death was not suspicious. Following their protocol, the sheriff’s office notified the San Francisco’s Medical Examiner, Police, and District Attorney to help them investigate the death. These agencies will conduct third-party investigations to determine the true nature of what happened. The Sherriff’s Office’s criminal investigation and internal affairs teams will also conduct investigations.

The SF Sherriff’s Office tweeted, “The individual’s next of kin are in the process of being notified. Any time the Sheriff’s Office experiences a loss of a life in custody is a sad and difficult time. We will provide updates as information becomes available.”
