SAN FRANCISCO—May has been a pretty darn good month to the Bay Area sports fan.
The Warriors are rolling into the NBA finals and The Giants have scratched and clawed their way back atop the NL West. Heck, even Niners training camp is practically right around the corner.
Of course, The Warriors, returning to the NBA finals for the first time in three decades, are the talk of the town. The Splash Brothers and Co. have taken the Bay, not to mention the rest of the sports world by storm with their historic dance to a Western Conference championship.
And yet, in McCovey Cove, their lies a developing storyline, one that will entertain fans much deeper into the dog days of Summer than the regions beloved band of hoopsters.
In spite of Sunday’s 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves, the Bay Area Bombers have all but erased the memory of their atrocious April, one in which the team got off to the fourth-worst start of any defending champion in the history of Major League Baseball.
The Giants followed April with an equally historic May, one in which the team won 21 games and enjoyed one of its most dominant months in franchise history.
The Giants now find themselves just a half game behind the arch-rival Los Angeles Dodgers, a team they have thoroughly manhandled in a young 2015.
However, if the two-month old season has revealed anything, it is that the MLB season is a true grind that paradoxically is a marathon defined by a number of streaking sprints.
In playing out the remainder of their 152-game schedule, the Giants need look no farther than their compatriots that call Oracle Arena their home.
When asked for his take on The Warriors, Manager Bruce Bochy opted for the man-of-few words route, saying, “Congratulations to Steve Kerr and the Warriors. A lot of hard work. I admire how they play together as a team. They’re a lot of fun to watch.”
And yet, that show is sadly nearing its conclusion, a conclusion that regardless of its nature, will define the Summer of 2015 for a sports region that suddenly finds itself the envy of America.
Brace yourselves, Summer is coming.
