HOLLYWOOD—There is something about horror legends from the 80s that just won’t die. Michael Myers is slated to return to the big screen in the eleventh installment in the “Halloween” franchise, “Halloween Returns.” The sequel was announced by Dimension Films and Trancas International Films.

Stepping behind the camera for the latest scare fest is Marcus Dunstan. Dunstan holds writing credits for “Saw IV, V, VI” and “The Collection.” Dunstan co-wrote “Halloween Returns” in collaboration with Patrick Melton.

While details around the latest outing haven’t been made public, rumor has it that the film will be a recalibration instead of a remake or reboot. Take that terminology anyone you like it. The flick is expected to be a stand alone movie with no connection to “Halloween” (2007) and “Halloween II” (2009) which were directed by Rob Zombie.

Zombie’s remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic was a worthy adversary to the original, while his 2009 follow-up was a complete disaster.

“Michael Myers has taken a long break from the big screen and we know fans are eager to see him return,” Bob Weinstein, co-chair of Dimension and its parent company, The Weinstaein Company, said in a statement. “We are excited to be back in business with Trancas and look forward to bringing one of the scariest installments of this franchise to audiences worldwide.”

The movie is slated to being production in July and could arrive in theaters sometime in 2016. Malek Akkad is set to produce the film carrying in the steps of his father Moustapha Akkad. Details regarding the plot have yet to be unveiled to the public.

Considering it’s been a little over 6-7 years since the last installment, audiences could be looking to be scared by one of the seminal horror icons of all-time. If the script harkens back to the original classic of weaving scares and a narrative that isn’t too complicated it should deliver all the essential elements of what audiences want: a scary movie.
