SACRAMENTO—On June 2, Californian’s came out in great numbers to cast their ballots in the state’s 2026 Primary Election. The primary narrows down the contenders to head into the General Election which will take place on November 3, 2026.
For the California Governor’s Race Trump endorsed, Republican Steve Hilton came in first place carrying 26.9 percent of the vote. Democrat contender, Xavier Becerra came in with a closed second with 25.8 percent of the vote. Hilton and Becerra will run against one another in November’s general election.
The Los Angeles Mayoral race has garnered national attention as Reality TV’s Spencer Pratt (R-CA) attempts to unseat incumbent Mayor, Karen Bass (D-CA). Neither candidate exceeded 50 percent of the vote or better, so both candidates will vie for the mayor’s seat on November 3rd. Los Angeles City Councilmember, and member of the Democrat Socialists of America, Nithya Raman came in 3rd in the Mayoral race.
California’s U.S. House race for District 41 results shows Republican Mitch Clemmons in the lead with 29.3 percent of the vote. He and Democrat incumbent Linda Sánchez, who carried 28.5 percent of the vote will compete for that House seat in November. Democrat contender Hector De La Torre is now defeated, and out of the race.
In the U.S. Congress all 435 districts in the U.S. House of Representative and 33 U.S. Senate Seats are up for election in addition to six non-voting members who are also up for reelection.
The Republican party currently has control of both chambers (House and Senate) of Congress. Republicans currently hold a 53-45 majority in the U.S. Senate. There are two Independents who caucus (vote or side with) Democrats. This would potentially give Democrats 47 of the votes.
In the House of Representatives (referred to often as “The House”) Republicans hold a 217-213 majority. There are five vacancies. Kevin Kiley, and an Independent from California (I-CA) caucuses with the Republicans which gives them 218 votes, for organizational purposes.
Gavin Newsom, who is not a blood relative of Rep. Nancy Pelosi(D-CA), is the nephew of Barbara Newsom, who was previously married to Ron Pelosi. Ron and Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, are brothers. The family has reportedly stayed close over the years.
In 2019, Gavin Newsom was elected Governor of California. There were three Recall Gavin Newsom attempts in his first year. The first was filed by Erin Cruz and 69 others on March 15, 2019, stating he “Failed to qualify for the ballot.” The second was also filed by Cruz and 137 others on August 2, 2019, and by James Veltmeyer and 99 others on August 26, 2019, all of which was for the same reason as were the recall requests in 2020.
Recall efforts for 2020 were on February 13, and February 21, and filed by Orrin El Heatlie and 124 others. Reports indicate the Recall Newsom campaign failed by 38.1 in favor and 61.9 opposed. An additional attempt was filed on June 3, by Carla Canada and 9 others.
On March 25, 2024, a new Recall was filed against Newsom by Anne Dunsmore and 455 others.
On February 18, 2025, the last recall effort was filed by Randy Economy and others. Again, all stated “Failed to qualify for the ballot.”
