SAN FRANCISCO— A new office building in the South of Market won city approval on Thursday, June 13 for a new project.

The SF Chronicle first reported that the Planning Committee approved the three-building complex presented by developer Tishman Speyer that would be situated at 598 Brannan Street in SoMa and will house over 5,000 workers.

The first phase of the project includes 711,136 square feet for office space, 65,322 for light industrial and retail space, a child care center, open space, and land donated from the city for affordable housing in the future. The second phase, which has yet to be approved, includes 211,601 addition square feet for office space.

Construction for the project has been in the works for the past seven years and has the backing of the community behind it.

This is the second project approved by the Planning Committee in the SoMa district. In March 2019, Pinterest signed a lease with the city for their new building at 88 Bluxome Street with developer Alexandria Real Estate Equities on board for the construction. The company leased 490,000 square feet that will replace the San Francisco Tennis Club.

Alexandria Real Estate Equities plans to change the space at 88 Bluxome into office space, life science labs, light industrial workshops, and retail space. They are also planning to expand the Gene Friend Recreation Center by adding two swimming pools, a new park along Bluxome Street, public art, and land for affordable apartments.

Alexandria has stated that they plan on moving the tennis courts underground.
