SAN FRANCISCO—Thanks to San Francisco Police Department Tenderloin Station Captain Matt Sullivan, who had listened to the Tenderloin community members’ feedback, Sullivan announced on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at a Tenderloin community meeting that starting next month in September 2025, there will be four police officers from the San Francisco Police Department from the Tenderloin Station on foot patrol as a way to improve the neighborhood’s street conditions in the Tenderloin District.

These foot patrol officers will hit the streets during the days and early evenings starting in the middle of September. They will contact the neighborhood’s residents and owners of the local businesses. They will also break up loiterers and address locals’ complaints.

The patrolling will take place in a three-block radius that include Leavenworth Street between Golden Gate Avenue and Ellis Street and Market Street and Jones Street.

On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Tenderloin community meeting at the San Francisco Police Department Tenderloin Station on Eddy Street, the most popular topic was acquiring foot patrol from the San Francisco Police Department. This new strategy could lead to arrests, but the main goal is to give more police presence in the Tenderloin community. People greeted this announcement with happy applause.

Though Sullivan has only been police captain of the Tenderloin Station for a month, he had already made significant changes in the Tenderloin community. For example, last month, he made an effort to block off certain areas of the neighborhood to vehicles for a few days at a time. This is to erase crime and other unwanted and unsavory activity that is obscured by cars.
