SAN FRANCISCO–On Tuesday, August 18, a deputy from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department assisted in saving a man that was suffering from an apparent drug overdose.

Sheriff Deputy John Caramucci responded to a call at City Hall Tuesday night at around 11:30 p.m. A custodial worker reported that a man was locked in a stall and appeared to be unconscious. Deputy Caramucci arrived on scene and was able to get inside the locked stall using a pocket knife. Upon gaining access to the stall, he saw the man lying down unconscious with a needle in his arm.

Deputy Caramucci called for paramedics immediately and they arrived in the matter of four minutes. The paramedics were able to revive the unconscious man and transport him to the hospital.

The identity of the man is still unknown. Details about the victim are scarce, but he is believed to be in his 30s. It was confirmed that the man was suffering from a drug overdose due to his use of heroin.

In 2007, a study done by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that San Francisco was the number one Metropolitan area in the United States that suffers from the use of drugs. The Tenderloin District in San Francisco is known to be an area where the homeless and those suffering from drug addictions are known to reside.
