SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced on December 12 that two suspects were charged in connection to a smash and grab. Denayaha Duree, 23, and Xavier Garcia, 20, were charged in connection to a commercial burglary in Union Square.
Duree and Garcia were arraigned on December 11, and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Both defendants were each charged with one count of second-degree commercial burglary (PC 459), one count of grand theft (PC 487(a)), one count of vandalism (PC 594(b)(1)) and one count of organized retail theft with intent to sell (PC 490.4(a)(1)). Duree is also charged one count of receiving or buying stolen property (PC 496(a)). The criminal complaint also alleges that both suspects were out on bail when the alleged crimes were committed (PC 12022.1(b)).
The SFDA’s Office reported that according to court records, on October 11, at approximately 2:42 a.m., multiple vehicles proceeded to the Dior at 185 Post Street in San Francisco. One of the vehicles began to back into the metal gate enclosing the entrance to the store. Once the vehicle destroyed the gate and doors, allowing entry into the store, at least 10 individuals, all masked and some gloved, entered the store and began quickly ransacking and stealing items. The group was in and out of the store in under one minute and successfully stole 66 bags valued at over $290,000 and caused about $250,000 in damage.
Both defendants have their next court date on December 24, for the preliminary hearing in this matter. The District Attorney’s Office moved to detain both Duree and Garcia pending trial. The court set no bail taking into consideration public safety other pending matters before the San Francisco Superior Court and another county.
The San Francisco Police Department is still investigating the case. Anyone with information should contact the SFPD Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
