The officers in question will be fired from their positions if the accusations are proved true.

The messages in question were unearthed by federal attorneys investigating the case of Sergeant Ian Furminger, a former plainclothes officer who was convicted in December 2014 of robbing drug suspects.

During the investigation, all four officers involved in the alleged text messages have been transferred from their usual posts to different units.

The San Francisco Police Department has expanded its investigation to ten different policemen potentially involved in the case.

According to SFPD Chief Greg Suhr, the policemen in question will lose their jobs if it is determined the racist and homophobic text messages were indeed sent.
