SAN FRANCISCO—On Tuesday, May 12, at about 11:30 p.m., a fire broke out in the second-floor light well at a residential apartment complex on the 200 block of Turk Street between Jones Street and Leavenworth Street in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene of the fire.

By 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, the fire travelled vertically inside the light well, reaching the roof of the six-story building. The fire was upgraded to a two-alarm fire. Streets were blocked off as fire crews had to cut into walls to put out the hot spots.

By early Wednesday morning, the fire was under control and extinguished. Over two dozen tenants were evacuated without any injuries reported. More than 25 residents were displaced. The American Red Cross was immediately dispatched to provide assistance in emergency support, disaster relief and resources to gain housing for those who were displaced.
