2015 MTV Movie Awards

HOLLYWOOD—It’s the award show, where those films and performances that you think will win, won’t. Yep, I’m talking about the MTV Movie Awards. This year’s festivities honored the best in cinema on Sunday, April 12 and leading the pack of all nominees was “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I,” but it was “The Fault of Our Stars” that was the night’s big winner.

The ceremony was hosted by comedienne Amy Schumer. I will admit I had never heard of the woman before she was given the honors to host this year’s festivities. So was Amy a hit or miss with audiences? She opened the show with a montage of clips poking fun at some of the biggest movies of the year like “Boyhood,” “Pitch Perfect,” “Divergent,” “Whiplash,” “The Fault in Our Stars” and “The Hunger Games.” The laughs were not as funny in the mockery of the films as one had hoped.

Some of the popcorn trophies were handed out before the ceremony began. Zac Efron became a repeat winner for Best Shirtless Performance for his work in the movie “Neighbors.” That comedy was also winner in the Best WTF Moment between Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne.  Meryl Streep took home the award for Best Villain for her wicked performance in “Into the Woods,” while Best Fight went to Dylan O’Brien and Will Poulter for “The Maze Runner.” Dylan was a double winner taking home the prize for Best Hero for “The Maze Runner.”

Schumer appeared a bit nervous in my opinion when she took the stage. She attempted to take jabs at some celebrities and current pop culture events. Some of the jokes delivered a few laughs, someone not so much. Best Female Performance was presented to Shailene Woodley.

Best Scared As S***t Performance was awarded to Jennifer Lopez for “The Boy Next Door.” It was a funny moment, as Mr. Channing Tatum decided to do a bit of a dance tease on behalf of Lopez who asked the “Magic Mike” stars to give the audience a show. I was starting to sense, that the appearance of big time celebs was a given that they would win the prize in their respective categories.

I will admit the bit taking aim at “Magic Mike XXL” with numerous ladies sneaking in tons of objects into the theater for personal pleasure was a funny moment to say the least. Another highlight of the night was actor Miles Teller sharing a bit of personal details about his friend Shailene Woodley who he presented the MTV Trailblazer Award to. Best Comedic Performance was handed out to Channing Tatum.

The show was not short of musical acts as Fall Out Boy took to the stage to rock out, as did Charlie XCX. The cast of “The Avengers,” Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner presented the Generation Award to Mr. Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr. That sneak peek at “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” was fantastic: Iron Man vs. The Hulk, can’t’ wait for the movie!

Zac Efron and Dave Franco took the prize for Best Duo and recreated that infamous scene from the movie “Neighbors” to accept the prize on stage. Their onstage antics might have been the funniest of the night, but I was starting to guess if that was an act or not.

Ladies Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara presented the award for Best Kiss to Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort for “The Fault of Our Stars.” Rebel Wilson stormed the staged with her wings to present Best Male Performance with the other ladies from “Pitch Perfect 2” to Bradley Cooper. Funnyman Jimmy Kimmel roasted Kevin Hart while presenting him with the Comedic Genius award.

The MTV series “Scream” unleashed its first trailer to audiences and it looks spooky good. If I’m not mistaken, it doesn’t look like that iconic mask will appear in the series. Audiences won’t have to wait long as the series debuts on June 30. The final award of the night, Movie of the Year was presented by a very dramatic Dwayne Johnson, which was not as effective as the writers expected.

In the end, fans voted for “The Fault of Our Stars” which capped off an amazing night for Shailene Woodley who walked away with a total of four awards. This was not a MTV Movie Awards that viewers will be talking about days from now. Very few laughs in my opinion, from hostess Amy Schumer. If you plan to spoof movies, spoof them in a way that is absolutely hilarious, otherwise its just dead air.
