HOLLYWOOD—Actress and TV star Diahann Carroll, 84, passed away in her Los Angeles home after a long battle with breast cancer on Friday, October 4. The news was confirmed by her daughter Suzanne Kay.

The actress is best known for several roles in films to television series including, 1974’s “Claudine” and “Dynasty” from1981-1989. She also played in the musical the “Five Heartbeats” in 1991.

She became known as the first African-American actress to star in a non-stereotypical domestic worker role in the television series “Julia” in 1968.

She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 1969 and an Emmy Award nomination in 2015 for her guest appearance on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Tyler Perry honored the fallen star after one of his sound stages over the weekend at the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta Georgia.

“Her level of grace, class and inspiration was just beyond anything I could ever imagine,” said Perry. “The very fact that we were able to have her on the planet at the same time as we are, we should all be very, very blessed.”

Carroll was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. She received nine weeks of radiation and was confirmed cleared of the illness. There was no family history of the disease.

The late star leaves behind daughter Suzanne and two grandchildren.
