SAN FRANCISCO—The pest control company Orkin released its annual list of American cities and regions with the worst reported cases of bed bug infestations, with the Bay Area landing in the 10th spot. The Bay Area ranked 14th on the list in 2015.

“The first signs of a bed bug infestation are often the bed bugs themselves or small dark stains bed bugs can leave behind,” said Orkin.

Bed bugs can reside in other places besides a bed mattress because the pests can easily move from place to place using frequently used, but seldom washed items, such as bags and purses.

Orkin combined San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose as one city in their ranking of the “Top 50 Bed Bug Cities.” Baltimore ranked number one on the bed bug infestation list. Washington D.C. placed second, followed by Chicago, New York, and Columbus.

During 2016, the entire nation saw an increase in the reported number of bed bug sightings and cases.
