San Francisco, CA—A pedestrian was killed in the Portola neighborhood on Saturday evening, January 4, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, according to NBC Bay Area.
The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. between Silver and Colby Avenues.
The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) reported the pedestrian was found to have sustained significant injuries. Despite the life-saving efforts of first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
This crash adds to the growing concern over traffic safety in San Francisco, which saw 41 traffic deaths in 2024, marking one of the deadliest years for the city. In response, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has been working on initiatives like installing speed cameras at 33 locations and proposing new speed limits on 11 streets to improve safety.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward and contact authorities.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
