San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO—SF Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Kansas City Mayor Sly James agreed to a friendly wager on Tuesday, October 21 on the victor of the 2014 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals.

The series is currently tied at 1-1. The Giants took Game 1, while the Royals were able to claim Game 2. According to a press release from the Mayor’s website, the Mayor of the losing city will travel to the winning city for a day to perform community service. If the SF Giants win, Mayor James will come to SF to sing with the Glide Ensemble and Change Band and serve meals to the homeless. If the Royals win, Mayor Lee will visit Kansas City and read to 3rd graders at a local public school.

Both mayors are also waging food items. If the Giants claim victory, Mayor James will send the world-famous Kansas City barbeque and Kansas City jazz music to SF, but if the Royals win, Mayor Lee will send Humphry Slocombe ice cream, Boudin sourdough bread and Philz Coffee to Kansas City.

“Again, for the third time in five years, San Francisco has turned Orange!” said Mayor Lee. “This improbable group of players refuses to quit, and whether they win ugly or win with walkoffs, it just keeps rolling. The Royals have been playing very well, but they’re no match for the arms of Bumgarner, Hudson, and Peavy or the timely hitting of Posey, Pence, Panik, and of course, NLCS hero Travis Ishikawa. I wish Mayor James and the Royals luck – they’ll need it against this magical 2014 Giants team.”

“Coming off back to back sweeps of the Angels and the Orioles, the Royals show no signs of slowing down,” said Mayor James. “We’ve waited 29 years for this and not even a Giant can stand in our way.  Our Royals are an elite group of players and are genuinely outstanding people and truly deserve to be world champions. Certainly, they already are in the minds and hearts of our community.”

Mayor Lee proclaimed “San Francisco Giants Pride Week” starting October 21 until the end of the World Series, urging Giants fans in the City and the world to celebrate their home team. Fans are being asked to wear their favorite orange and black, display signs, flags or any form of support for the home team. The San Francisco Giants flag will remain flying over City Hall.

San Francisco International Airport, City Hall and Coit Tower, as well as several other civic and landmark buildings in the region will remain lit in orange for the duration of the World Series. Games 3, 4 and 5 of the World Series will be held at AT&T Park on October 24, October 25 and October 26. If the Giants are not able to close things out by Game 5, Games 6 and 7 will be played out at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
