SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco Animal Care and Control rescued over 40 rabbits, a majority of which were underage kits and babies, after their owner attempted to sell them on Craigslist as “meat or pets,” the listing read.

According to SF Health Code Section 48, it is illegal to sell rabbits in the city. No additional information about the owner has been released, including any arrests or charges.

Animal Care and Control officials are examining the rabbits’ health and partnering with SaveABunny, a Mill Valley-based rescue organization, to find homes for them.

Officials say the animals will be ready for adoption next month, and those interested in adopting can refer to the website for additional information.

“We’d like to encourage the community to call us to report animal neglect or abuse,” said Virginia Donohue, the executive director of Animal Care and Control.

The public can contact the SFACC’s emergency dispatch at (415) 554-9400.
