OAKLAND—A shooting was reported in Oakland at approximately 1:00 p.m. along Interstate 580 on Monday, December 19. According to reports, road rage may have played a role in the shooting, which police say left one vehicle “riddled with bullet holes.”

The driver of a Honda admitted to tailgating and unsafely passing a Mercedes-Benz, authorities noted. Officers reported that the passenger of the Honda “displayed a rude hand gesture,” while passing the driver inside the Mercedes-Benz.

According to police, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the other vehicle. Neither the driver or passenger of the Honda were injured.

The suspect could only be described as a black male, who was driving a black Sedan, authorities noted. The front license plate was tucked between the dashboard and windshield. The vehicle had no rear license plate.

All eastbound lanes of I-580 near Lakeshore Avenue were closed due to the shooting just before 3 p.m. Officials from the California Highway Patrol searched for evidence along Interstate 580’s closed lanes and found multiple shell casings. The CHP re-opened the highway at around 3:45 p.m.
