UNITED STATES─Well, America I aged again this week, as my birthday came around. I used to be big on celebrating my birthday, but as you get older the focus changes. You want to spend time with family and friends and sometimes keep things low key. I mean who wants to do more than what he or she has to do if they don’t’ have to do it. When I was younger, I celebrated my birthday every year in epic fashion. Sometimes it would be a night on the town, and literally all night on the town.

What I’ve learned as I get older is that it is still important to celebrate your birthday. I mean you only get one a year, so why not indulge. You don’t have to do anything over the top, but you should do something. I will admit I’ve had a few birthdays recently where I just want to chill at home. You’ve either had a few crazy days leading up to your birthday or you’ve just had a rough few weeks or months and you just need that body to decompress a bit. With that said, if you want to take some money and have a lavish dinner, do it! Purchase that luxury item or thing that you’ve been eyeing or talking about for weeks? Do it! Take that vacation that you’ve been eager to make happen for years? Then do it.

Your birthday is about you, and so many people forget that time and time and time again America. It is a day of celebration about all things that you like or all things that make you happy. I’m the type of person who likes a nice dinner with family and friends, followed by maybe a drink or two. For those who know me they are well aware that I’m not a drinker; I don’t drink. If there is one day where I might indulge in a drink it’s only on my birthday, the other 364 days of the year or in this case the 365 days of the year, alcohol will rarely touch my lips.

I will make an exception for my birthday, but not to the point where I have a hangover. I turned 21 once and I learned my lesson, so I don’t’ want to travel down that path again people. Another thing people know about me is every single year I always get a cake for my birthday. I’m a cake person by heart when it comes to dessert, particularly carrot cake and while I will not indulge in more than one slice on the festive day, I like to have a birthday cake people. The more extravagant and over the top, the cake, the better it tastes in my personal opinion.

The one thing I want people to remember when it comes to your birthday is that you gain a bit more wisdom and knowledge with each day that you age. Don’t forget that. The older you get the wiser you get, and don’t look at older being a bad thing. It’s simply a number, if you feel young at heart, stay young at heart, just remember it does not give you a pass for doing stupid things.
