HOLLYWOOD—I’m just going to put it out there: I was very disappointed with the crop of films released for summer 2018. I felt there were far too many misses than actual box-office hits and surprises. However, it looks like the saving grace for the rest of the 2018 movie season is this fall. I love this time of year because some of the best of the best in the cinematic universe are unleashed to unsuspecting moviegoers. We know its awards season so expect plenty of Oscar fare, but at the same time its drama, drama and drama, but there is a bit of everything for movie lovers this fall.

So let’s kick-off our conversation discussing the month of September, which is a difficult transition if you ask me. You don’t see the good flicks until the second week in the month. However, post Labor Day gives audiences a treat with the prequel “The Nun.” Yeah, if you saw “The Conjuring 2” you know exactly what I’m talking about, but this time we get a backstory and that teaser trailer, whew, it nearly made me jump out my theater seat. I’m also looking forward to the action thriller “Peppermint” starring Jennifer Garner, who is out for revenge after her husband and daughter are brutally killed. It reminds me a bit of “Law Abiding Citizen,” but with a woman at the center of the madness. Both flicks arrive on September 7.

Well, well, “The Predator” is back again, this time on the hunt for human blood after a kid unwittingly unleashes a signal summoning the creature. Look, we had “Predators” which was ok, but if this flick starring Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn and Jacob Tremblay is a bust; it’s time to leave the franchise alone. If you’re looking for more thrills, “A Simple Favor” starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively looks quite tempting, as friends who bond over drinks until one of them goes missing. Both flicks arrive on September 14. If comedy is your cup of tea “Night School” starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish should be on your list. Haddish portrays Carey a teacher who puts Hart, a high school dropout in need of his GED through the ringer. The flick arrives on September 28. When it comes to Oscar bait, there is the drama “Lizzie” starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, as well as “White Boy Rick” chronicling the true tall of Ricky Wershe Jr., the youngest drug kingpin at the age of 14. Matthew McConaughey stars in the flick as Ricky’s father. Got say “White Boy Rick” looks like a good one, which arrives on September 14.

Oh, October is going to be a super busy month for me at the multiplex, because there are indeed some good ones to watch out for. Ryan Gosling reteams with Damien Chazelle for the biopic “First Man” which chronicles astronaut Neil Armstrong’s journey into space. Looks like Chazelle and Ryan could be hearing Oscar call their name come February 2019. There is also “The Hate U Gave” that puts a major spotlight on all the news headlines we’ve seen about police brutality. “First Man” arrives on October 12, while “The Hate U Give” ushers into theaters on October 19. You also have to throw in the drama “Beautiful Boy” starring Timothee Chalamet as a drug addict, with his father portrayed by Oscar nominee Steve Carell. I have a feeling Chalamet could be looking at another Oscar nomination come February.

The biggest buzz for the month of October has to be the third remake, yes, you heard me, third remake of the drama “A Star is Born.” This time Bradley Cooper is in the director’s chair and his chanteuse is none other than pop star Lady Gaga, who dare I say looks riveting in the flick. I’m not a fan of musical dramas, but this is a flick I have to see America when it arrives on October 5. I’m calling it now expect Oscar nominations for Cooper and Gaga next year.

The flick that is at the TOP of my list for October is the sequel “Halloween.” Yes, 40 years to date, after the 1978 original director by John Carpenter, we have another entry, but this one wipes the slate clean. All the other flicks in the franchise are erased and this is a direct sequel to the original with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode. The ultimate boogeyman Michael Myers has been locked up in a sanitarium for 40 years, manages to escape while being transferred and returns back to Haddonfield. Carpenter is not directing, those duties belong to David Gordon Green, but he is composing the score and from the first look of that trailer, we might finally get a taste of horror at its best. Let’s just say I cannot wait until October 19.

In November, we have the animated sequel “Ralph Breaks the Internet” arriving on November 21, where our titular video game character searching with Vanellope (voice of Sarah Silverman) stumble across a bevy of Disney princesses. Looks like plenty of fun. So many people are amped for the boxing sequel “Creed II” which sees the return of Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad. This will be an interesting one as we witness Apollo Creed take on the son of Ivan Drago. Yeah, many of you might remember that name from “Rocky IV.” The sequel arrives on November 21. If you’re looking for a creepy remake Luca Guadagnino takes a stab at reviving Dario Argento’s 1970s classic “Suspiria,” this time with Dakota Johnson in the starring role, and Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth and Chloe Grace Moretz in supporting roles. It arrives on November 2.

The biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is another flick that screams Oscar as audiences get a look at the life of rocker Freddie Mercury. “Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek portrays Mercury and from the looks of the tease that we’ve seen, it’s a flick not to be missed. We have another sequel people, this time “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” with Claire Foy taking on the role of Lisbeth Salander and Fede Alavarez taking on directorial duties. The movie arrives on November 9.

Eddie Redmayne returns as Newt Scamander for the sequel, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” arriving on November 16, while Taron Egerton takes on the role of “Robin Hood” arriving on November 21. Lucas Hedges is certainly building up quite the resume as an actor. He co-stars alongside Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman in “Boy Erased” on November 12 and then alongside Oscar-winner Julia Roberts for “Ben is Back” on December 7. Both are very different roles, but meaty roles for the Oscar-nominee who could find himself in contention for Oscar yet again in 2019.

We really get into awards season in December with the release of the drama “Mary Queen of Scots” starring Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Guy Pearce” on December 7. The movie everyone is buzzing about is the musical and sequel “Mary Poppins Returns” with Emily Blunt in the title role. The flick arrives just in time for Christmas. It’s not at the top of my list, but a Transformer is getting its stand-alone story with “Bumblebee” starring Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld on December 21. Felicity Jones portrays Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg in “On the Basis of Sex” on December 25.

It would not be movie season without a comic book superhero, this time its “Aquaman” with Jason Momoa in the starring role. The film has earned some buzz, but rather DC can deliver a hit like Marvel is still up in the air. However, with names like Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Nicole Kidman as part of the cast things could be promising. Another flick that is generating buzz is the drama directed by Adam McKay (“The Big Short”) about former Vice President Dick Cheney. Christian Bale, who I consider one of the most versatile actors to date, takes on the role and transforms himself in a way that many actors are not willing to do. Bale could get another go at Oscar, this time as Best Actor. The film, whose title has not yet been revealed is expected to arrive in theaters on December 14.

So while that is just a slice of the flicks hitting the multiplex in the next four months, but there is a wide range of variety for Americans. Fall 2018 looks like a fun time at the theaters.
