The Korean War is commonly known as “The Forgotten War” and it earned the title because it is not one of the wars that is constantly referred to, like the Civil War or World War II. The Korean War began in June 1950 and came to a military stalemate in July 1953. The war began when the North Koreans invaded South Korea and was fought primarily in the Korean Peninsula.

The number of American deaths is estimated to be about 54,260, although only 33, 746 of those are contributed to combat deaths.

The main reason Stevens stated that he wants this memorial to be built is because “people [need to] know about wars so that we can hopefully prevent wars in the future.” The memorial is set to be located outside the gates of the San Francisco Cemetery in Presidio overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.
