SAN FRANCISCO—Police was summoned to a call on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at around 3:15 a.m. about a vehicle accident, occurring at the intersection of Sixth Street and Howard Street, resulting in the death of a 78-year-old male pedestrian, who had been hit.

When police arrived on the scene, they saw that the elder was suffering from life-threatening injuries; they performed CPR , and the paramedics transferred him to a local San Francisco hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver remained at the scene, cooperating with police. According to a witness, it appeared that a ‘modified moped, not a proper motorbike’ had hit the elderly gentleman.

As of 2025, in San Francisco alone, this accident counts as the 12th pedestrian fatality. In 2024, there have been 42 fatalities, and 24 are pedestrian deaths, the most highest number since 2007. Statistically, seniors have made 9 out of 12 deaths this year. The 78-year-old gentleman is the third senior pedestrian to be killed in the South of Market. This accident occurred just five days after speed cameras had started issuing tickets. There are multi-cameras up in the area where the accident occurred. According to one pedestrian advocacy group, Walk SF, the intersection of Sixth Street and Howard Street is San Francisco’s ‘high-injury network,’ where it identifies 12% of streets where 68% of accidents occur.

The intersection of Howard Street and Sixth Street is a street where drivers feel safe enough to speed, yet it is a long way for pedestrians to cross. San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is in the process of providing safety street improvements through the Sixth Street Safety Pedestrian Project.
