SAN FRANCISCO—Starting on Sunday, January 1, 2017, fares will increase for San Francisco’s public transportation system. Passengers who pay cash will see a .25 cent increase in their ticket costs, bringing the price of a MUNI ticket to $2.50.

Passengers using Clipper Cards or the MuniMobile app will continue to pay $2.25 for Muni single-ride or limited-use tickets.

The discrepancy in prices is SFMTA’s way of nudging passengers to use digital means, like Clipper Cards, to pay for MUNI instead of cash. The SFMTA hopes to create a more efficient system by using Clipper Cards and the MuniMobile app to help speed up the boarding process.

“These rewards are meant to encourage quicker, safer fare payments that allow Muni to spend less time boarding at stops, and more time getting you where you’re going,” said Aaron Bialick on SFMTA’s blog.

The Price of Muni’s “A” monthly passes, which includes BART Fares within San Francisco, will also increase from $86 to $91, while the “M” pass will remain at $73 in 2017.

Seniors, youth (ages 5 -18), and people with disabilities will also see a .25 cent increase in their fare if they pay cash, increasing prices to $1.25 for single-ride or limited-use tickets.

Seniors, youth, and people with disabilities will also see an increase in monthly passes from $25 to $36 for Muni.

The SFMTA indicated that Muni fares have to increase to keep up with the rising cost of maintaining and operating an efficient transit system.

“While nobody loves to pay more, Muni fares must keep pace with rising costs and inflation as we work to keep the system working safely and efficiently,” said Aaron Bialick.

The SFMTA Board of Directors approved the cost increase in April 2016, with broader goals in mind for the fiscal year.
